Nature's SAFE : Cryoconservation

Nature's SAFE is on a mission to Save Animals From Extinction by collecting and indefinitely storing and regenerating reproductive cells and cell line from endangered animal species. We apply innovative biotechnology to protect biodiversity options for the future - as the most important and effective solution to the dual threat of climate and biodiversity crises.

Species all over the world face extinction: each day we are losing millions of years of evolution. Repaired environments will only succeed if we have genetically diverse networks of fauna to sustain them. This critical decline in biodiversity is threatening the air we breathe, our climate, and our own existence. Nature’s SAFE is a charitable living biobank aiming to halt and reverse this biodiversity loss. In partnership with zoos across Europe and the UK, we collect, indefinitely store and regenerate reproductive cells and cell lines from tissue of endangered species. Our science-led initiative unites biotechnology with conservation management stakeholders in a one plan approach to stop vital genetics from being lost today. In the future, these living cells can be used directly in endangered species breeding programmes to protect and restore nature. We envision a future with multiple satellite living biobanks around the world, improving life for generations to come.

Proving maternity cover, my role was in seeking funding and developing awareness for Nature's SAFE. In particular I developed trusts and foundations grant applications and corporate parnerships, including cause realted markerking, developed press releases and web site content, a newsletter, and social media/branding. I am assisted in planning a fundraising event to be held at the Natural Histiry Museum in February 2023, with keynote speaker Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
